Designated Employer Representative Training

This (DER) Designated Employer Representative Training program is an industry-developed course that teaches your company's DER about their roles and responsibilities in the drug and alcohol testing of employees. These roles and responsibilities are according to DOT regulations, DHHS Mandatory Guidelines and industry best practices. After completing the course you will have the opportunity to take DATIA's (Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association) exam to become a certified DER.

Objectives of the course:

  1. Provide DER's with adequate background knowledge of the drug testing industry to assist companies with achieving 100% compliance with drug and alcohol testing.
  2. Provide a general overview of testing procedures so that the DER has an understanding of the testing process from beginning to end.
  3. Provide a more complete understanding of the DOT mode you have to comply with.
  4. Better define the role of the DER in assuring company and DOT policy compliance.

What you will learn in this course is:

  • Drug and Alcohol Testing Procedures (Security and privacy issues, chain of custody, etc...)
  • Non-mandated vs mandated testing
  • Who can be a DER
  • Responsibilities of the DER (receiving test results, removing an employee from a safety-sensitive position, refer employees to an EAP, coordinate physician referal for "shy bladder" and "shy lung" situations)
  • How to "navigate 49 CFR part 40 and other regulations
  • How to create or update company policies

THIS COURSE MEETS DOT REQUIREMENTS FOR SUPERVISOR TRAINING OUTLINED IN 49 CFR PART 40

Course Objectives:

1. Train supervisors to detect patterns in behavior that point to substance abuse.

2. Equip supervisors in the proper procedures needed to handle any situation.

3. Train supervisors the proper way to document substance abuse situations.

4. Provide teaching of what alcohol and other drugs do to the human body and how the body reacts to these substances.

When: August 9th at AOHC (upstairs conference room) 9:30 to 11:30
